What is Willunga Basin?

The Willunga Basin:

Willunga Basin is the naturally defined region bounded by the coast, and by hill crests sweeping from Sellicks Beach around behind Willunga, McLaren Flat to Kangarilla, and then across to join the coast again at Maslin Beach. It is an area that we believe has a distinct nature, quite different to suburban Adelaide. It deserves different planning and, above all, protection from over-development. It is a magnificent experience to stand on any hill surrounding Willunga Basin and gaze on such an expanse of landscape. It stretches the lungs to crest the hill out of Old Noarlunga and breathe in the green vista stretching right to the rounded hills and sea. Contrast this with cresting Tapley’s Hill going north to see the smog and sprawl of the city.

We must protect the entire Willunga Basin, including the sensitive environment of the coast.

We need to ensure that human activity continues to step lightly and sustainably here. Nothing but the vigilance of continued community vision can maintain the necessary protection.

We have the responsibility to ensure that Willunga Basin is not overcome with urban sprawl and unsustainable development.
